Bombay High Court Invites Applications for Judicial Research Assistant – 2026

The High Court of Judicature at Bombay has issued an official notice calling for applications to fill 24 Judicial Research Assistant (JRA) posts on a contract basis for one year. This is a prestigious opportunity for law graduates and postgraduates to work directly alongside sitting High Court judges.

Who can apply?

To be eligible, candidates must fulfill all of the following conditions:

  • Law graduates who passed the final LLB exam (V & VI semester for 3-year LLB, or IX & X semester for 5-year LLB) in the first attempt with a minimum of 55% marks — or a Postgraduate Degree in Law (LLM).
  • Candidates holding a PG Degree in Law (LLM) will be given preference by the High Court.
  • Must have basic computer proficiency, including knowledge of legal research software and case law databases.
  • Must be between 21 and 30 years of age as on the date of application.

How to get recommended?

Applications must be accompanied by a recommendation from one of the following authorities:

The Principal of the institution from where you pursued your LLB/LLM — or alternatively, the President of any of these Bar Associations: Bombay Bar Association, Advocates Association of Western India, Incorporated Law Society, or the High Court Bar Associations at Nagpur, Aurangabad, or Panaji-Goa.

Selection process

There is only one stage of selection — a Personal Interview worth 50 marks (minimum passing marks: 25). The interview date will be published on the official High Court website and communicated to shortlisted candidates via email. All interview travel is at the candidate’s own expense.

Final appointment is subject to the approval of the Hon’ble Chief Justice, and actual posting will depend on vacancy and the requirement of individual judges.

What does the role involve?

JRAs assist the Hon’ble Judge with judicial work — this includes conducting legal research, attending court, making notes, drafting memoranda, and handling related tasks. The working hours are flexible and can extend beyond court hours and on holidays, as directed by the assigned judge.

JRAs cannot appear as advocates in any court or tribunal during their tenure and cannot practice before the judge they were attached to for one year after leaving the role.

  • Name change document (if applicable)

Note: If your university issues grades/CGPA/SGPA instead of percentage, obtain a subject-wise marksheet with percentage from your university before applying.

How to submit your application

  • Pay a non-refundable application fee of Rs. 500 via Postal Order or Demand Draft payable to “Assistant Registrar for Registrar General, High Court, A.S., Bombay”.
  • Attach self-attested copies of all required documents and your recommendation letter.
  • Send the application by Speed Post / RPAD / Courier / Hand Delivery to: Registrar (Personnel), High Court, Appellate Side, Bombay, 5th Floor, New Mantralaya Building, L.T. Marg, Mumbai – 400 001.
  • The envelope must be superscribed: “Application for Appointment of Judicial Research Assistant”. Hand delivery is accepted on working days between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm.
  • Deadline: 29 May 2026 by 5:00 pm. Applications received after this date will not be considered.
