The Malayali Nurses Union in the capital Delhi has demanded a written apology and strict action against those responsible for issuing the Govind Ballabh Pant Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (GIPMER) circular. This decree has been withdrawn. In the circular, the nursing staff was asked not to use Malayalam language during work.
The Malayali Nurses Union said that it was a shocking circular for them. They said that they felt it was a threat to his linguistic freedom. They said that the officials concerned should apologize for this as they have humiliated the entire state. However, the reason behind this was given that most of the patients and colleagues do not know this language due to which they get a lot of inconvenience.
The Govind Ballabh Pant Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (GIPMER) circular asked nurses to use only Hindi and English language for conversation. Strict action will be taken for speaking Malayalam while on duty. After this the hospital administration withdrew the order saying that it was issued without his knowledge.
In a circular dated June 5, nursing staff at the Delhi government-run GIPMER hospital were barred from speaking in Malayalam. They were advised to use only Hindi and English. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had also objected to this circular, saying that Malayalam is as much Indian as any other language.
