Delhi High Court Issues Interim Order in Defamation Suit Against Astrologer Umang Taneja

The Delhi High Court, presided over by Justice Amit Bansal, has issued an interim order in a defamation suit (CS(OS) 613/2025) filed by renowned astrologer Trishla Chaturvedi against Umang Taneja and others. The court directed the immediate removal of allegedly defamatory videos and posts targeting Chaturvedi, a Vedic astrology practitioner with over 20 years of experience and a significant social media following of over a million.

Case Background Chaturvedi, a recipient of the “Jyoti Vibhushan Award” (2016, 2017) and “Sarvashreshth Jyotish Puraskar” (Rajasthan, 2016), boasts 1.29 million YouTube subscribers and 834K Instagram followers. She accused Taneja, a fellow astrologer, of posting derogatory videos on platforms managed by defendants No. 2 and 3, including claims of black magic, drug abuse (via morphed photos), and labeling her a “cheap guest.” These actions, she argued, tarnished her reputation, supported by a prior injunction (CS DJ ADJ 1012/2024) and Taneja’s conviction in a criminal defamation case.

Court’s Ruling On September 4, 2025, the court found the content prima facie defamatory, posing irreparable harm to Chaturvedi’s reputation. Defendant No. 2 was ordered to remove specified videos within 48 hours, with defendants No. 2 and 3 tasked to act expeditiously if unmet. Taneja is restrained from further defamatory posts until the next hearing. The court registered the suit, issued summons, and set timelines for written statements (30 days) and replications (30 days thereafter), listing the case for November 6, 2025, before the Joint Registrar, and January 20, 2026, before the court.

This ruling underscores the court’s stance on protecting reputational rights in the digital age, balancing free expression with accountability. For the full order, refer to the Delhi High Court Order Portal.
