SCAORA Urges CJI to Publish Hearing Sequence a Day in Advance to Ease Challenges for Advocates

The Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) has written to Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna requesting that the sequence of hearings for matters listed before benches be published in the supplementary causelist the day before, rather than being displayed digitally on the morning of the hearing. The Association argued that the current practice, which reveals the sequence after 10:30 am on the day of the hearing, creates significant logistical challenges for advocates and other legal professionals, particularly senior and elderly members of the Bar who may not be adept with technology.

The Association also raised concerns about benches denying requests for at least one passover in the first round, describing this as a matter of “great concern” that disrupts advocates’ ability to manage their schedules. SCAORA Hony. Secretary Nikhil Jain, in his letter, emphasized that advanced knowledge of the order of hearings would allow advocates to better plan their day and attend to their matters effectively. The Association further underscored the importance of granting at least one passover, ensuring fairness and accessibility for all members of the Bar.

The letter reflects ongoing efforts to address procedural hurdles faced by advocates in the Supreme Court, seeking reforms to improve efficiency and ease of access to justice.
