Justice Harjit Singh Bedi, former Supreme Court Judge, passed away on November 21, 2024. He served as a judge of the Supreme Court from January 12, 2007, to September 5, 2011. Before his elevation to the Supreme Court, he was the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court and had previously served as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

In 2012, he was appointed by the Supreme Court to head a monitoring committee tasked with overseeing the investigation of custodial deaths in Gujarat. Born on September 5, 1946, Justice Bedi was part of a prominent legal family. His father, Tikka Jagjit Singh Bedi, was a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, and his son, Justice Jasjit Singh Bedi, currently serves as a judge in the same court. The Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association expressed profound grief over his demise, noting his contributions as a distinguished jurist. To honor his memory, the Bar announced that lawyers would abstain from work post-1 PM on November 22, 2024. Justice Bedi’s cremation was held in Chandigarh, reflecting the deep respect he commanded in the legal fraternity .
