In a recent reshuffle in India’s legal aid framework, Supreme Court Judges Justice Surya Kant and Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai have assumed critical roles to enhance justice accessibility for marginalized communities. Justice Surya Kant has been appointed as Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC), succeeding Justice Gavai, who has now taken on the position of Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), an appointment formalized by the President of India, effective November 11, 2024.
Under Justice Surya Kant’s leadership, the SCLSC will focus on providing legal aid to those approaching the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, Justice Gavai’s role at NALSA will involve overseeing efforts to ensure accessible, free legal aid across India, particularly for economically disadvantaged individuals. These appointments reinforce the judiciary’s commitment to upholding the constitutional mandate of Article 39-A, which emphasizes justice for all, regardless of financial or social obstacles.
