Farewell to CJI Dr. D.Y. Chandrachud: A Legacy of Justice, Compassion, and Progress

On November 10, 2023, Chief Justice of India Dr. D.Y. Chandrachud offered parting reflections on his final working day before stepping down from office. Speaking during a ceremonial farewell in the Supreme Court, CJI Chandrachud shared his gratitude and humility, noting the fleeting nature of roles in the judiciary. “We are here as pilgrims, birds for a short passage of time, doing our work and leaving,” he remarked, “but the work we do can leave a mark on the institution.” He emphasized that while individual judges come and go, their contributions collectively build and sustain the Court.

In his remarks, CJI Chandrachud expressed confidence in his successor, CJI-Designate Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who will assume office on November 11. He praised Justice Khanna as “stable,” “solid,” and “dignified,” adding that his transition out of the role would “not make the slightest difference to the Court” because of Justice Khanna’s strength and steady leadership. His words reflected a deep commitment to the institution’s continuity and resilience, regardless of individual personalities.

A Warm Farewell from the Legal Community

The farewell ceremony was marked by an outpouring of appreciation from senior advocates, government representatives, and junior lawyers alike. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta shared his gratitude, saying, “DYC will really be missed.” He reflected on CJI Chandrachud’s profound impact, describing him as the “Karta of the Judicial Family,” who led the Court with dedication and an unwavering sense of duty.

SCBA President Kapil Sibal also honored CJI Chandrachud’s legacy, calling him an exceptional judge with “limitless patience.” “In my 52 years in the Supreme Court, I have never seen a judge like you,” Sibal said. He credited the CJI for giving a voice to marginalized communities and ensuring they were recognized and respected in the Court. “You brought them before this Court and showed them what justice is,” he added.

A Legacy of Vision and Inclusivity

Senior advocate KK Venugopal recalled his long-standing connection to the Chandrachud family, reminiscing about the CJI’s decision to join the judiciary rather than remain in private practice. He praised the positive outcome of that choice, noting that India gained a remarkable CJI whose contributions enriched the nation’s justice system.

Many other senior lawyers, including Huzefa Ahmadi, Dr. Menaka Guruswamy, and Madhavi Divan, echoed similar sentiments. They praised CJI Chandrachud’s dedication to fair hearings, respect for women advocates, and support for technological advancements in the legal process, particularly his leadership in promoting online hearings. This commitment enabled more inclusive, accessible, and efficient justice, reaching more citizens across India.

Under his leadership, CJI Chandrachud championed the rights of marginalized groups, including persons with disabilities, SC/ST communities, and economically weaker sections. His dedication to equity and access left an indelible mark on the Court’s approach to justice.

A Historic Tenure

Dr. D.Y. Chandrachud’s tenure as the 50th Chief Justice of India began on November 9, 2022. Before his elevation to the Supreme Court in 2016, he served in the Allahabad High Court. His journey in the judiciary has been marked by a commitment to legal reform, equity, and modernization. As he bids farewell, his legacy of compassion, integrity, and innovation in the judiciary will inspire generations of lawyers and judges to come.
