NHRC issues notice to Delhi HC over increasing incidents of violence in Tihar Jail

According to the reports yet another incident of inmates clashing inside the Tihar jail, Delhi has taken place. It is the sixth such incident that has happened in this month alone- in which a 25-year-old prisoner was beaten up by another on September 22.

The National Human Rights Commission(NHRC) has observed that if the contents of media reports are true then it raises a serious issue of human rights violations of the prisoners who are in custody .

The Commission has observed that such incidents of violence inside the jail clearly indicates negligence on the part of the prison authorities which results into severe violation of human rights of the inmates who are in jail, under the custody of state.

Considering this, the commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and DG, Prisons, Govt. of NCT of Delhi calling for a detailed report within four weeks. The reports should include steps that are taken or are proposed to be taken to address the issue of violence in Tihar jail.

The latest victim of tihar jail told during the investigation that he was first abused and then beaten up. If reports are to be believed around 30 inmates have been injured  in the month of September due to such incidents in the jail.
