Police Officers Who Steal Money from the Government Must Go To Jail, Says the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court issued harsh oral remarks on Monday about a ‘new pattern’ in the nation in which police personnel take money while they are on good terms with the administration and seek protection when they face criminal charges following a change in leadership.

The statements were made in response to a bail request submitted by suspended Additional Director General of Police Gurjinder Pal Singh in an extortion case brought against him.

However, a bench comprised of CJI Ramana, Justice Surya Kant, and Justice Hima Kohli decided to grant Singh temporary protection from arrest until October 1st, 2021, and placed the current issue with previous special leave applications submitted by him in respect to other FIRs.

The Bench was hearing a petition filed by suspended Additional Director General of Police Gurjinder Pal Singh seeking protection from extortion and criminal intimidation charges brought against him.

Previously, the Supreme Court gave Singh four weeks of protection in a sedition case brought against him. The current special leave petition has been filed in response to the Chhattisgarh High Court’s interim decision allowing the petitioner’s plea filed seeking interim relief in terms of FIRs filed against him for extortion, and scheduling it for hearing on September 28th.

On July 1, 2021, the home of the candidate was attacked by the police and they supposedly discovered a few bits of papers in a channel behind the place of the solicitor which were later on recreated by them into certain notes, scrutinize, insights report against ideological group and against few agents of the different wings of the State.

The substance of the recreated records has been claimed to be illegal retaliation and disdain against the State Government and because of which, a FIR against him was enrolled against him for submitting offense under Sections 124A and 153A of I.P.C.
