On Friday, the Kerala High Court Set aside a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging the Lakshadweep administration’s decision to abandon dairy farms and remove meat from mid-day meal menus in Lakshadweep schools.
On a plea brought by a native of Kavaratti island, advocate Ajmal Ahmed, against administration’s measures, a Division Bench of Chief Justice S Manikumar and Justice Shaji P Chaly issued the judgement.
In June of 2021, the applicant, who claims to be a representative of the Save Lakshadweep Forum, contacted the Court.
The High Court had put a temporary stay on such judgments on June 22 and challenged the reasoning for eliminating meat from mid-day meals in Lakshadweep schools, noting that doctors had stated that non-vegetarian meals are necessary for children ’s wellbeing.
As a result, it had ordered “Food made and given to Lakshadweep schoolchildren, comprising meat, poultry, fish, and eggs, as well as other goods, shall be continued till more orders are received. To be clear, the previous system should be maintained “.
It further stated that the dairy farms must continue to function until additional orders are issued.
