Three women were sworn in as Supreme Court justices on Tuesday, marking a watershed milestone for gender equality. There are Hima Kohli, B.V. Nagrathana, and Bela M Trivedi are among the nine new Supreme Court appointees.
In addition to her appointments, the Supreme Court now has four female judges, making it the highest court in the country with 33 judges. In its existence, the Supreme Court has had 11 female judges (including new appointees).
Justice Hima Kohli, the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court, has been promoted. In 2006, she was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court, and the following year, she was promoted to permanent judge.
If appointments are made by seniority, S Venkatramiah, daughter of former Chief Justice of India, Justice B.V.Nagrathana of Karnataka, could become the first woman Chief Justice of India in September 2027. Justices B.V.Nagrathana gave an emotional departure speech.
On February 17, 2011, Justice Bela M Trivedi, the first woman to be appointed to the Gujarat High Court as a Supreme Court judge, was elevated to the High Court as an additional judge. From 2003 to 2006, she served as Gujarat’s Law Secretary. She will serve on the Supreme Court until June 10, 2025.
