The Supreme Court on Friday criticized the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Intelligence Bureau (IB) for not adequately responding to complaints regarding harassment and threatening of judges.
CJI NV Ramana said “There are several cases in the country which involves gangsters and where high profile people are accused. So judges are threatened mentally also by sending messages on whatsapp, SMS . Complaints were made but CBI has done nothing. No change in attitude of CBI, sorry to observe this”.
The CJI also said that there was a “new trend” of maligning judges if an adverse order was passed.
These observations came while hearing a suo motu case registered by the apex court in the wake of death of Dhanbad Additional District and Sessions judge Uttam Anand.
The CJI added, “Look at this unfortunate case of the death of a young judge. This is the state’s failure. This area has coal mafias and security should have been provided to the society and the residences of judges.”
The top court had earlier directed Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of Jharkhand submit a status report on investigation into death of judge Anand within a week .
The matter will be heard again on 17 August.
