On Friday, the Supreme Court denied Mukesh Jain’s request for a reduction in the Rs 5 lakh cost imposed on him for filing a writ petition challenging Dipak Misra’s nomination as Chief Justice of India.
The application was “misunderstood” by a Division Bench consisting of Justices DY Chandrachud and Mr. Shah. The Court also recognized that the applicant has made “reasonable complaints” against the Supreme Court judges in his claim for a price reduction.
The Court also ordered that the cost award be recovered from the petitioner as land revenue arrears by the relevant authority. Furthermore, the Supreme Court has directed that the PIL will not be heard in the future until the petitioner can show documentation of settling the cost. In addition, the current order, as well as any other PILs filed by Mukesh Jain, should be placed on record.
The petition was filed in 2017 by Mukesh Jain, the controversial self-styled godman Swami OM (now deceased), in response to then-Chief Justice of India JS Kehar’s recommendation of Justice Dipak Misra as his successor. was enlisted in The Supreme Court denied the case in August 2017, calling it a “publicity stunt” and slamming the petitioners with a coercion penalty cost of 10 lakh
Mukesh Jain, who is reported to be the national president of Dharma Rakshi, recently blamed the Chief Justice of India’s attack on Rath Yatras at Odisha temples on WhatsApp messages. An FIR was filed against him in Odisha as a result of this. In such cases, the Orissa High Court recently granted him bail.
