On Friday, the Supreme Court rejected PIL’s request for instructions to restart the supply of herbal medicines from Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, claiming that it miraculously cured patients with terminal illness COVID19.
Three judges headed by CJI NV Ramana issued instructions at the request of a law student requesting instructions to allow the supply of herbal mixtures made by Shri Bonigi Anandaiah of Krishna Patnam, Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh.
The court later rejected the defense and refused to accept the lawyer’s request to “withdraw the defense”. Although the Ministry of Ayush claims that no harmful substances have been found in these drugs, the petition states that this herbal mixture has shown miraculous effects in many patients (including critically ill patients with low blood oxygen levels).
The request also challenged the regional administration’s order, while seeking support for Shri BonigiAnandaiah to increase production and distribution of the mixture.
Due to the lack of scientific evidence on the efficacy of the drug and the lack of authorization through pre-established procedures, the regional authorities prohibited the supply of this mixture.
The petition said the government’s decision to stop the distribution of the 100% natural herbal blend with no side effects is an arbitrary and unreasonable one given the current circumstances that kill thousands of lives every day.
