The Supreme Court will pronounce its judgement on the pleas asking the Centre to pay ex-gratia compensation amount of rs.4 lakh to every family whose member died as a result of Covid-19.
Justices Ashok Bhushan, Vineet Saran, and M.R. Singh led, 3-judge bench, In the appeals made by Advocates Gaurav Kumar Bansal and Reepak Kansal, Shah, would deliver his judgement via video conference.
A bench of Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice M.R. Shah demanded the Centre’s answer on its compensation system and death certificates.
“If an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh is granted per each individual who lost life as a result of Covid-19, the total sum of SDRF could be spent on this issue only”, the Centre claimed in its 183-page affidavit filed on Saturday night, June 19.
“In the event of unforeseen calamities in which such ex-gratia is granted under SDRF regulations, the calamity is of a brief and defined period, starting and terminating rapidly,” it went on to say. There’s also no precedents for ex-gratia payments for a continuing ailment or a long-term disastrous event that lasts months or years.”
The court has also asked for information on a matter involving death certificates and any letters sent to the relatives of those who have died, specifying the cause of death.
