The Supreme Court denied activist Gautam Navlakha’s, request for bail in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist connection case in Bhima Koregaon, Maharashtra, on Wednesday. Navlakha’s appeal against the Bombay High Court order denying him bail in the case was rejected by a bench of justices UU Lalit and K M Joseph.
The top court had reserved its decision on Navlakha’s application for bail in the case on March 26. The top court had requested a response from the NIA on March 3 in response to Navlakha’s request for default bail in the case, alleging that the charge sheet had not been filed within the time limit.
Navlakha surrendered to the NIA on April 14, last year, after the FIR against him was re-registered in January 2020. He was detained by the NIA for 11 days until April 25, and since then he has been held in judicial custody at the Taloja jail in Navi Mumbai.
According to police, at the Elgar Parishad meet in Pune on December 31, 2017, some activists allegedly made inflammatory speeches and offensive remarks, which sparked violence in the district the next day at Koregaon Bhima.
