For the pending coal scam cases since 2014, the Supreme Court on Monday appointed two judicial officers in a special court.
On the request of the Delhi High Court’s Registrar General to post another judicial officer as special judge in place of Justice Bharat Parashar who was conducting trial of approximately 40 coal scam cases.
Earlier on this matter, On 24th September 2014, the apex court cancelled 214 out of 2018 coal blocks allocated between 1993 and 2010. Further in July 2014, the Supreme Court decided to set up special CBI courts to try cases arising from coal block allocation scams.Chief Justice S A Bobde, on considering the names of judicial officers suggested by the Delhi High Court remarked all the judges to be good.
The bench also comprising Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian appointed two judicial officers instead of one on the suggestion of special public prosecutor R S Cheema as there are more than 40 pending cases currently.
It was also noted on the submission of Cheema that the law connotes the disposal of such cases within two years which may be extended up to four times by a period of six months each.The bench further observed that it is a necessary and appropriate step to appoint two special courts.
Judges Arun Bhardwaj and Sanjay Bansal would now replace Bharat Parashar, who has been hearing the cases since 2014.
