The High Court Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi of Punjab and Haryana High Court took a significant move. He issued a note requesting the bar members to avoid addressing him as “Your Lordship’ Or ‘My Lord’. He also urged to avoid using the words such as “Obliged” and “Grateful”.
In a recent Supreme Court case, the Chief Justice had taken objection against a law student who used “Your Honor”. In the year 2014, a PIL was filed to ban the use of words like “my lord” and “your lordship”.
The contention of the party was that these terms represent slavery and should be strictly prohibited throughout India to uphold the dignity of the country. But the PIL was rejected by the bench.Many individual judges have requested to avoid using the words “My Lord” and “Your lordship”.
These two words were used for the relics of the Colonial post. Bar Council of India Rules prescribe the use of words like “Your Honor” or “Hon’ble Court” in Supreme Court and High Court.
The word “Sir” can be used in all other subordinate Courts and tribunals.
