The Delhi High Court seeks the response from the Delhi Government regarding the petition filed against the “Right of the inmates for consulting a lawyer to two meetings in a week”
The notice was issued by the Division Bench (CJ DN Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh).
The petitioners in the petition filed through Advocate Harshit Goel has challenged Rule 585 of the Delhi Prison Rules, 2018. They stated that it violated the right to access to justice as guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution of India to the offenders and the convicts.
According to the petition following points were prayed by the petitioner:
- Prison rules should provide the offenders for a meeting with their legal advisors from Monday to Friday for ‘n’ number of times as it will take care of the basic human rights of the prisoners and an immediate trial is provided to the offenders that are under trial.
The above prayer was referred by looking into the legal system the developed nations like USA.
The matter would be now heard on April 4th
