On Wednesday, the Supreme Court agreed to hear a plea filed regarding the Permanent Commission for women officers in the Navy who are scheduled to retire on 31 December 2020.
The release of the 10 female officers expected to retire on 31 December has also been postponed by the Apex Court. In January, the Court will hear the plea along with other similar pleas for women officers in the Army.
On Wednesday, the divisional bench of Justices Indira Banerjee and Aniruddha Bose agreed to put the matter before a permanent bench without prejudice to the party’s rights and arguments. The petition claims that, in the absence of conformity with the Apex Court’s judgment in February 2020, a permanent commission was denied to women officers in the Navy.
In addition, the court noted that if myths persist about men being the bread-earners, being stronger than women, etc., then such thought would never go away.
