Petition in Supreme Court seeks independent, regulatory media tribunal

A petition seeking the creation of an independent, regulatory Media Tribunal for the expeditious hearing of complaints lodged by viewers against media corporations, has been filed in the Supreme Court.

The petition submitted by the film producer Nilesh Navlakha stated that- in order to preserve a balance between the right to freedom of speech of the media and the right to information of civilians and the right to dignity under Article 21 of the Constitution, the importance of the Tribunal was necessary.

The petitioner urged the court to set up an independent High Powered Committee headed by a retired Chief Justice or Judge of the Supreme Court or High Court and consisting of distinguished people of different fields/professions and concerned central government stakeholders, pointing out that self-regulation of the media cannot be the solution to the growing problem of media-Business regulation.
