The Supreme Court has chosen not to concur with the view of the Bombay High Court that Z-plus security cover should be provided to an individual or individuals who perceive a threat to their life and have the capacity to pay for it. The apex court expressed its views while dismissing a petition on Tuesday, which had sought the cancellation of Z-plus security cover provided to the Ambani brothers and their kin.
The petition in the Supreme Court was filed by one Himanshu Agarwal, who had moved the apex court against the Bombay HC’s decision to dismiss his PIL. Agarwal had pleaded before the Bombay HC to withdraw the Z-plus security cover provided to the Ambanis.
He had contended that the Ambanis were well-off and have the capacity to pay for and arrange their own security. The state should not provide security to the business families from pubic exchequer’s money, he had pleaded.
The bench, while dismissing the plea, directed the state to hold a periodic review of threat perception to the Ambani brothers and their families.
