The Student Bar Council of the NLUJJA has written a letter to the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court seeking the removal of Dr. J S Patil Vice-Chancellor of National Law University and Judicial Academy Assam (NLUJAA). Dr. J S Patil is facing investigation in an FIR on sexual harassment allegations. Student demands to temporarily step down of VC during the investigation.
Students Bar Council has said in his letter “The Chancellor of NLUJAA also happens to be the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court and the Vice-Chancellor claiming his ‘backing’ even before the matter has been investigated creates a dangerous precedent and provides fodder for the fear that the Vice-Chancellor may use his connections and acquaintances in the State Judiciary to steer clear of a fair trial”.
The FIR against Dr.Patil has been filed under sections Sections 294(obscene acts in public), 354A(sexual harassment of women) and 509(Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), claiming that he had exposed his nudity to the neighbour’s female family members.
