The Supreme Court has initiated Suo Motu Criminal Contempt Proceedings against Advocate Prashant Bhushan.Twitter communication India Pvt. Ltd also made a party in the case.
Advocate Prashant Bhushan on June 27, 2020, wrote on twitter which read as, “When historians in future look back at the last 6 years to see how democracy has been destroyed in India even without a formal Emergency, they will particularly mark the role of the Supreme Court in this destruction, & more particularly the role of the last 4 CJIs.
On June 29,2020, He also wrote alleging current CJI of ‘riding a Rs. 50 lak bike of a BJP Leader ‘ and ‘keeping SC in Lockdown’.
Prashant Bhushan already faced contempt proceedings when he tweeted about the appointment on M. Nageshwar Rao as interim CBI director.
Earlier also he faced the contempt proceedings when he alleged former CJI’s to be involved in corruption.
The matter is listed for hearing before the three judge bench of Justice Arun Mishra, Justice B. R. Gavai & Justice Krishna Murari.
This will be the first Suo Motu criminal contempt matter of this year.’
The maximum punishment for undermining the majesty of Court and obstructing the administration of justice is six months under The Contempt of Court Act.
