
Oil India Limited, a PSU said it will move the Gauhati High Court against the Pollution Control Board’s latest order. The order directed closing of all drilling and production operations at Baghjan oilfield in Tinsukhia district. It was alleged that companies violated environmental laws, hence why PCB issued “closure notice.”
The PSU claimed that they had PCB’s consent to all the activities mentioned above. Hazarika said that, “OIL had sent a detailed reply to the PCBA’s queries and subsequently, requested it to withdraw the closure notice. The company is expecting a favourable response.” Well no.5, was uncontrollably spewing gases and it caught fire recently and killed 2 firefighters on site.
Following this, PCBA issued a show-cause notice to OIL seeking its work record of the past 15 years. The notice alleged that, You are operating your Baghjan oilfield installation without any effluent treatment plant. The Baghjan oilfield is just 500 metres to the Naguri-Motapung wetland, which is part of the eco-sensitive zone of the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park which is affected severely due to the negligence from your end.”
