NCBC DIRECTS UGC TO TAKE ACTION AGAINST NLU’S FOR NOT FOLLOWING THE OBC RESERVATION AND DOMICILE CRITERIA

The National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) on directed the University Grants Commission (UGC) to ,take rigid action against National Law Universities (NLUs)for going against the mandatory reservation polices for students belonging to socially and economically backward classes.
A complaint was moved last year by Senior Advocate Ramesh Babu Vishwanathula, following which the Commission had initially summoned the Vice-Chancellor of NALSAR, Hyderabad in June 2019.
The NLUs submitted that were they are completely governed by their respective statutes and that no other law was applicable over them. To which the commission expressed their dissatisfaction.
The Commission went on to indicate the faults of NLUs that they reserves 15 seats for foreign nationals, despite the absence of a provision to admit such students. Thereby, admission to Indian students from the Backward Classes was denied.
