The Bench Justice Ashok Bhushan, SK Kaul and MR Shah heard counsels on the suo moto PIL regarding the migrant crisis during this Covid Pandemic period.
Various issues like registrations of the workers, sanitation maintenance in the trains , providing of food and water were all brought to light.
Senior Advocate Colin Gonsalves states that the registration of the migrant workers are not working, most of them are going back to the industries to work.
Senior Advocate Kapil Sanil suggested the decentralisation of the Registration process to make it more approachable for the Migrant Workers.
Senior Advocate Indira Jaisingh stated:
“Many workers have been slapped with FIRs for violating lockdown and walking for searching transport for homes. Let’s not add insult to injury and humiliate them more. This is a biological disaster and these people are called internally displaced people.”
Supreme Court reserved its verdict to be given on 9th of June on the PIL.
