Covid-19 app raises surveillance issue.
The Aarogya Setu app, launched by Indian government to stem the novel virus, to find infected people based on their location, and medical and travel history. This app was made mandatory for all employees in private and public sector by Indian Home Ministry. The app uses Bluetooth and location services to trace a user’s contact.
The Digital Rights Organisation Internet Freedom Foundation called it as “Privacy minefied”, by saying “it does not adhere to principles of minimisation, strict purpose limitation, transparency and accountability.”
The contact tracing app could violate privacy rights and civil liberties; criminal and foreign adversaries could use it to extract personal data and the technology might linger long after pandemic is over, as India has no proper data protection law nor a data protection authority.
